The game follows the classic tower defense formula, but there are a few mechanics you should understand before jumping into your first match.

In this Angry Birds Tower Defense Beginner Guide, I’ll explain everything you need to know to get started. We will cover the match screen, how to place Red, how gold works, how to deal with Minion Pigs, and how to use the speed and wave controls.

Whether you’re playing solo or teaming up with friends, these beginner tips will help you understand the basics and build a stronger defense. Let’s get started!

How to Play Angry Birds Tower Defense

Angry Birds Tower Defense is a Roblox tower defense game developed by Rovio Official. Your objective is to defend Bird Island from King Pig’s army by placing different bird characters along a fixed path.

The pigs move along the track toward your eggs, and your bird towers automatically attack enemies that enter their range. You need to place your birds in good positions, upgrade your defenses, and survive every wave.

You can play alone or team up with friends in co-op mode. In co-op, everyone works together to defend the same path, so coordinating your towers can make a big difference.

1. Understand the Match Screen (HUD)

When you enter a match, you will notice several numbers and buttons around the screen. These are important because they tell you how your defense is performing and how many resources you have available.

Here is what each HUD element does:

HUD Element What It Does
WAVE Shows your current wave and the total number of waves in the stage.
UNITS ALIVE Shows how many pigs are currently on the map.
Speed Buttons Lets you change the speed of the match.
SKIP TO NEXT WAVE Allows players to vote to start the next wave early.
Health Shows your remaining defense health.
Gold Shows how much gold you have available to spend.
Towers Opens the tower menu.
Settings Opens the game settings.
Red House Icon Takes you back to the home area.

There are two things I recommend keeping an eye on throughout every match: Gold and Health.

Gold determines whether you can place more bird towers, while Health shows how much damage your defense can take before the stage is lost.

Try to keep track of both instead of focusing only on how many pigs you have defeated.

2. How to Place Your First Tower (Red)

Red is the first bird tower available in your starting loadout. He is a single-target damage dealer, making him useful for attacking individual pigs as they move along the track.

Placing Red costs 150 Gold, so make sure you have enough before selecting him.

Follow these steps to place your first tower:

  1. Start a match and check your current Gold.
  2. Find Red’s tower card at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Make sure you have at least 150 Gold.
  4. Select Red’s card from your loadout.
  5. Move your cursor to a suitable location beside the pigs’ path.
  6. Check the circle around Red to see his placement and attack range.
  7. Place him where his range covers as much of the track as possible.

Once Red is successfully placed, you will see a floating -150 appear, and your Gold counter will decrease by 150.

Red will then automatically attack pigs that enter his range.

Where Should You Place Red?

Don’t place Red randomly. The best location is usually somewhere that allows him to attack pigs for as long as possible while they move along the track.

Look for the green arrows painted on the ground. These arrows show the direction in which the Minion Pigs travel.

Try to position Red beside a section of the path where he can attack enemies for a longer period.

Also, remember that Red costs 150 Gold. On the early beach stage, placing him can leave you with only 10 Gold. This means you should think carefully before choosing his position.

3. Understand Minion Pigs and Enemy Waves

Your first enemies in Angry Birds Tower Defense are Minion Pigs.

These enemies walk along the track toward your eggs, and your bird towers must defeat them before they get through your defenses.

Each Minion Pig has a name tag and health bar above its head. A fresh Minion Pig in the early beach stage has 26/26 HP.

As your towers attack, its health decreases. For example, if you see a pig with 7/26 HP, it is already close to being defeated.

Some pigs have cosmetic accessories, such as party hats, but you should focus on their health bars when checking how close they are to being defeated.

How Waves Work

Enemies arrive in groups called waves.

You can check your current progress through the WAVE counter at the top of the screen.

For example:

  • 1/5 means you are on the first wave out of five.
  • 2/5 means you are on the second wave out of five.
  • 5/5 means you have reached the final wave.

The UNITS ALIVE counter shows how many pigs are currently walking along the path.

If this number keeps increasing and your towers are not defeating enemies quickly enough, you may need more towers or better coverage.

Keep Your Health High

Your defense starts with 100/100 Health.

Every pig that gets past your defenses can cause problems for your team, so your goal is to defeat every wave before too many enemies reach the eggs.

If your Health starts dropping, check where the pigs are getting through and improve your tower placement.

4. How to Use Game Speed Controls

Angry Birds Tower Defense includes speed controls that let you change how quickly a match progresses.

You can choose between the following speeds:

  • 1X
  • 2X
  • 3X
  • 5X
  • 7X

Matches start at 1X by default.

Higher speeds help you finish easier waves more quickly, which is useful when your towers are already strong enough to handle the enemies.

However, I recommend using 1X when you are still learning the game or need to make important decisions.

For example, if you are saving Gold for another tower, slower speed gives you more time to watch the track and decide where to place your next bird.

Beginner tip: Use higher speeds when your defense is stable, but switch back to 1X if too many pigs are getting through or you need to reposition your strategy.

5. How Skip to Next Wave Works

You will also notice a button called SKIP TO NEXT WAVE.

This feature allows players to vote to start the next wave before the current one has completely finished.

In a solo match, the counter may show 0/1. This means one vote is required to call the next wave early.

In co-op, the counter shows how many players have voted to skip.

Skipping waves can save time, but it can also make the match more difficult because additional pigs may arrive before your towers have finished dealing with the current enemies.

When Should You Skip a Wave?

I recommend skipping only when your towers are handling the current wave comfortably.

Avoid skipping if:

  • Your Health is already low.
  • Several pigs are still alive.
  • Your towers are struggling to defeat enemies.
  • You do not have enough Gold for additional defenses.
  • Your team needs more time to prepare.

It is better to take a little longer and keep your defense safe than to rush into a wave your towers cannot handle.

6. Understand Tower Loadout Slots and Unlocks

Your tower loadout appears along the bottom of the match screen. This is where you select the birds you want to use during a match.

When you first start playing, most of the loadout slots are locked.

The starting layout includes:

  • One active slot containing Red.
  • One open slot marked with a +.
  • One locked slot marked 5.
  • One locked slot marked 7.
  • One locked slot marked 12.

The numbers on the locked slots represent the thresholds required to unlock them.

The open slot marked with a + can be filled when you have another bird available.

As you unlock more slots and bird towers, you can bring additional characters into your matches. This gives you more options when building your defense.

Why Are More Tower Slots Important?

Different birds have different abilities, so having more available slots allows you to build a more balanced team.

For example:

  • Red focuses on single-target damage.
  • Chuck attacks quickly and specializes in piercing damage.
  • Bomb deals area-of-effect splash damage.
  • Terence is designed for heavy damage against bosses.
  • Stella provides knockback and support.

You should gradually unlock more birds and experiment with different combinations to see which ones work best together.

7. How to Unlock More Birds and Progress

Your progression is connected to chapters, experience, and bird unlocks.

As you complete chapters, you earn experience points that help you unlock additional bird towers and improve your existing units.

At the beginning, you will mostly rely on Red. However, as you progress, you will gain access to more characters with different abilities.

This is where the tower defense strategy becomes more interesting because you need to decide which birds to use and where to place them.

I recommend learning what each bird does before building your loadout around it. A tower that deals excellent single-target damage may not be the best choice against a large group of enemies.

8. Best Beginner Tips for Angry Birds Tower Defense

Here are some useful tips that will help you during your first few matches.

Don’t Place Red Randomly

Red costs 150 Gold, which is a significant amount during the early game. Check his range before placing him and choose a location where he can attack pigs for as long as possible.

Watch the Green Arrows

The green arrows show the direction pigs travel along the track. Follow them to understand the enemy route and identify useful tower positions.

Keep an Eye on Your Gold

Don’t spend your Gold without thinking about your next move. You may need to save up for another bird instead of placing a tower in a poor location.

Check the Units Alive Counter

If too many pigs are walking along the track, your defense may not have enough damage or coverage. Pay attention to this counter throughout the match.

Use Speed Controls Carefully

Higher speeds are useful when your towers can handle the waves easily. Switch to 1X when you need more time to plan your next move.

Don’t Skip Every Wave

Skipping waves can make matches faster, but it can also send more enemies into your defense before you are ready.

Experiment With Different Birds

As you unlock more characters, try different tower combinations. Each bird has a different purpose, and learning how to combine their abilities is important for later chapters.

Play Co-op With Friends

You can team up with friends to defend the same path. Working together gives you more opportunities to coordinate tower placement and handle difficult waves.
