On October 16, 2026, indie game developer C#4R4CT3R dropped the much-anticipated demo for their lo-fi psycho-thriller romance Visual Novel Rain98. While previous demos were shown at trade shows like PAX, this marks the first real chance for players to try it out on their own PCs.

The demo spans about three hours, guiding players from the prologue all the way into the second chapter. It’s a great way to dive into the unique narrative, various dialogue choices, and some intriguing mini-games where you’ll team up with the enigmatic Reina to navigate her challenges.

Before jumping into Rain98, make sure to check your specs. The visuals carry an emotional weight, and immersing yourself in the soundscape enhances the experience. This is not just about mechanics—it’s about feeling.

The demo covers roughly three hours of gameplay, beginning at the prologue and leading into the heart of the game’s second chapter. Players will get a real sense of the storytelling style, face multiple dialogue choices, and engage in mini-games designed to help you earn money, all while forming your relationship with the mysterious character, Reina.

Rain98 is a lo-fi psychological suspense adventure set against the backdrop of Tokyo in 1998, centered around Reina Amehara, voiced by Rio Tsuchiya. You mysteriously time-travel back to this era, where Reina, unimpressed with the future, claims she can end the world. The game combines visual novel storytelling with interactive elements, collectibles, and adventure sections to explore the city alongside Reina. The emotional depth is enhanced with meticulously designed visuals, animations, and a lo-fi soundtrack, immersing players in a world filled with a sense of unease. You’re not just watching a narrative unfold; you’re living through it.
